How did you meet your current, or most recent, significant other?
I was home on leave from the Navy and my best friend offered to set me up for coffee with his girlfriend's best friend. That was okay with me so we went out one evening. During the ride back to their apartment I said, jokingly, "Would you marry me?" She replied that she was engaged to a guy in the Army.
I said, "Well, you should have better taste than that." I then asked her if, since she was taken, she had any sisters at home. She pulled out some pictures and said, "I've got four sisters."
Well, one of them (18) looked kind of scary, one (16) was pretty cute, and the other two were too young. So I pointed to the cute one and said, "What about her?"
She said, "Maybe."
A couple days later my friend called me.
"Hey, I got you a date with Diann's sister."
I, remembering the pictures, said, "Which one."
"Marilyn."
Marilyn was the scary one -- I remembered that. Well, it was after all only one date.
When I arrived at the appointed time and knocked on the door I was admitted by the baby sister (Lynnette, then about 12). She led me into the living room and I saw this beautiful girl and we locked eyes. It wasn't the cute one -- the scary one had been transformed!
N.B. In the picture her braces had been very badly painted out, giving her mouth an odd (REALLY odd) shape and her hair was short and frizzy. When we met her braces were gone and her hair was shoulder length soft curls. Later, when we became engaged, that same picture was printed in the newspapers. When one of my parents' best friends came over to meet Marilyn, I introduced her, and the friend looked at her and said, "Oh, thank God! Wasn't that a terrible picture?" Years later another friend and his wife were over for supper and they asked to see our wedding album. When he saw Mariliyn's picture (the scary one from the newspaper), he rolled on the floor laughing for about 10 minutes. Needless to say, it was NOT a flattering picture.
We dated three or four times before I had to go back to San Diego, but we wrote back and forth for a year. The next year, when I was home on leave again, we dated pretty constantly, became engaged, and four months later we were married.
Apparently it took -- we're coming up on 41 years in April.
