Who taught you how to ride a bike?
My dad. I got the bike for Christmas (we actually did presents on Christmas Eve, so I got it Christmas Eve). The getting of the bike is more entertaining than learning to ride it, so for your benefit I'll expound below. But first, the learning.
The next morning (Christmas day) we went outside with the bike. Note this is in Nebraska, in the dead of winter. Nevertheless, Dad got me up on the bike and gave me a push. I went about six feet and plowed into the snowbank abutting the sidewalk. At least it was a soft fall. Another push and maybe 20 feet. Another push and I got about 1/3 of the way around the block. Walked the bike back. Another push and went all the way around the block. Never needed another lesson.
Now, about the delivery of the bike.
As I said, we opened our presents on Christmas Eve. Mom said it was because Dad couldn't wait for my sister and me to get our presents. After we were finished, Dad suddenly cocked his head and said, "Tommy! I think I heard Santa on the front porch. Go out and see."
I doubted it. I wasn't names Thomas for nothing. "I didn't hear anything," I told him.
"No, no," (he was really excited) "I heard Santa on the porch. Go look!"
"I didn't hear anything." I was 8, and wasn't about to go looking for Santa on a cold December night.
"GO OUT AND LOOK ON THE DAMN PORCH!"
"Okay, okay."
So I went out on the porch and there was my bike.
Then I got excited!
The moral is, when your dad says he hears Santa, you'd better hear Santa too!
