The Advantages of Powdered Milk
We mix up powdered milk, rather than buying fresh milk at the store. Here's why.
1. Cost. Even though SAMS has stopped carrying powdered milk at ca. $9.00 a box (about 8 gallons mixed) and we now have to get it at Kroger at about $10.50 a box, it's still way, way cheaper than whole milk.
2. Convenience. The way we go through milk, I'd be at the store every couple of days buying fresh. I get several boxes of powdered milk at a time, so I only have to replenish every three weeks or so.
3. Health. Powdered milk is skim milk.
4. Storage. A gallon of powdered milk, in the pitchers we use, takes about 2/3 the space of a gallon of whole milk on the fridge shelf.
5. Cooking. You can add milk powder directly to sauces or gravies without having to draw on the cold stuff in the fridge. As, for instance, using the boiling water from the mashed potatoes and milk powdered milk for gravy.
There are only two things to watch out for with powdered milk.
First, only use 2 cups per half gallon, rather than the 2 2/3 cups recommended on the package. It tastes a lot better with less.
Second, it must be COLD to be consumed! Lukewarm, or even lukecool powdered milk is not palatable. Period.
Third, you have to get used to it. This is no different than beer, black olives, or anything else you haven't acquired a taste for.
Fourth, most visitors are horrified at the thought of drinking powdered milk. They can either suck it up or bring their own.
We've happily used powdered milk for years.
